Random808

Random 808 (a play on Roland's famous Drum Machine, RC-808) adds randomness to drum patterns imputed by the user. This enhances the humanist feeling of digitally sequenced drums.

 

The 16-stage drum sequencer triggers drum samples from the vst drum machine according to the triggering probability and velocity range defined by the users. An abstraction that randomly outputs the final velocity was added and saved to the Project directory. Four patch presets (Snapshots) are configured after parameterizing the sliders. These include "50/50" (triggers a note 50% of the time, with each having a velocity in the range 1-100), "Maybe House", "Maybe Dancehall" and "Maybe DnB" (all of which follow the predominant pattern of the genre, with variable percussions played at low velocities).

 

I had some fun coloring this patch, using the color combination of RC808 as the theme. The resulting sound was also delightful, I feel like I could listen to the Dancehall rhymes for hours because it never repeats itself. This is much more enjoyable than clicking drum patterns on a piano roll. I also tried to let the drum machine play with the 8-stage sequencer.
